KoçDigital and Entek’s joint venture has brought to life an AI-powered hydrology prediction project, emerging as a notable innovation within the energy sector. This initiative utilizes an analysis of 56 distinct variables, such as temperature, humidity, snow thickness, and topographical features from the past 25 years, to forecast the volume of water that will be available to hydroelectric power stations across seven plants.
Revolutionizing Efficiency: More Electricity with Same Amount of Water
The collaboration between Entek and KoçDigital aims to use AI in hydrology management to produce electricity at the right time, efficiently utilizing renewable resources. This approach not only contributes to sustainability but also aims to maximize commercial benefits. The project considers critical factors such as the storage capacity of the dam and the water level, aiming to prevent water wastage and optimize energy production.
By accurately predicting the amount of incoming water, the project enables more effective use of dam capacity, ultimately achieving higher electricity production with the same volume of water. A one-meter increase in water level translates to a 1% increase in electricity production efficiency, with goals to extend this gain up to 2.5 meters.
The AI models developed for this project have been trained with historical data, achieving high accuracy rates of up to 90% during the challenging feyezan period. These models are continuously improved and are used to make daily, 6-month, and 12-month forecasts, adapting to complex inter-variable temporal dependencies and interactions through deep learning.
Global Recognition: Davos Summit, TİSK Joint Tomorrow Awards and Conferences
At the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Davos Summit, under the theme “Rebuilding Trust,” during the session titled “New Apps for Climate Adaptation,” KoçHolding CEO Mr. Levent Çakıroğlu shared insights into Koç Group’s priorities in adapting to climate change and the benefits of the technologies they have developed. Mr. Çakıroğlu emphasized that water scarcity is among the most significant problems caused by climate change, highlighting the critical importance of projects aimed at increasing water efficiency by mentioning this project.
This project was honored with the Digitalization Award at the TİSK Joint Futures Award Program and was presented as a novel example in the literature on sustainability at the YAEM national conference. These accolades demonstrate the project’s significant impact not only in the energy sector but also in academic and professional circles.
KoçDigital and Entek’s project serves as an excellent example of how digitalization and AI technologies can play a crucial role in achieving sustainability and efficiency goals in the energy sector. This project significantly contributes to minimizing spillage risks and commercial losses, enabling data-driven decision-making, and setting an innovative step in the energy sector that serves as a guide for future projects.
With the success of this project, Entek and KoçDigital have embraced an approach that prioritizes digital transformation and innovation in the energy sector. This approach will inspire future projects and raise sustainability and efficiency standards in the industry.
